Nintendo responds to NPD data

October 16th, 2008

Unique Controls Put Wii at No. 1 for September NPD; Nintendo DS at No. 2

Backed by a variety of unique interfaces, Nintendos Wii console topped the U.S. video game hardware sales charts with nearly 687,000 units sold in September, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Nintendo DS was the No. 2 best-selling system, with nearly 537,000 sold.

Wii enjoyed the biggest monthly unit sales increase with 234,000 more units sold in September than August. Wii also saw a year-over-year increase of more than 37 percent over September 2007.

Four games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10 best-selling games of the month, including Wii Fit at No. 2 with nearly 518,000 sold, Mario Kart Wii at No. 4 with more than 353,000 sold, Wii Play at No. 7 with nearly 243,000 sold and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii at No. 8 with more than 223,000 sold.

The four Wii games in the top 10 all feature controls just not possible on other video game systems, said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of Americas executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. The Wii Balance Board and Wii Wheel give players new ways to interact with their games, while the Wii Remote controller transforms into a pool cue, table tennis paddle or lightsaber. Consumers have truly responded to this variety of entertainment options.

PS3 OutSold AGAIN! in JAPAN By 360

October 15th, 2008

DC R1D3R, 15/10/2008 - Xbox 360 sales (6,690) continue to dominate Sony’s PS3 in Japan as Microsoft’s winning streak races to five straight weeks in a row against their bitter rivals. Moreover, PlayStation 3 sales are now falling perilously low (beating out last week’s lowest ever recorded sales tally) with only 5,899 Japanese consumers purchasing the next-gen console. With over a month of trailing behind Microsoft’s console in their own backyard, this no longer qualifies as an anomaly for Sony and surely some deep, thought provoking questions need to be asked over at Sony HQ. Just what the hell is going on in the Land Of The Rising Sun? Hit jump for the rest of the weekly sales stats.

PS3 As Sony Records Lowest weekly Sales Ever, 360 Outsells it.

October 9th, 2008

DC R1D3R, 09/10/2008 - The latest Media Create hardware sales data from Japan has been released and shows that not only is Microsoft’s Xbox 360 continuing to outsell rival Sony’s PS3, but it’s actually starting to have a negative affect on Sony’s highly treasured sysytem. This week Xbox 360 managed to sell 8,271 units, whilst Sony’s PS3 managed just 7,232 units……Sony’s lowest recorded sales ever, since the launch of the PlayStation 3. Many industry insiders predicted an upturn in fortune for the PS3 this week, considering the fact that TGS 08 conference would relinquish some interest in the system, but so far, it hasn’t panned out that way. Hit jump for the rest of this weeks sales data.

360 Sales Have Doubled in US, More Than Doubled In Europe, Quintupled In Japan

October 9th, 2008

You know hotcakes? The 360’s selling like ‘em. The company have announced during their TGS address this morning that, since a range of price-cuts were introduced for the console across the US, Europe and Japan over the past few months, sales have - shockingly - increased. According to Microsoft’s John Schappert, US 360 sales have “doubled”, European sales are up by “62%”, and they’re up “five-fold” in Japan. Whichever way you look at it, that’s an increase.

Resistance 2 Beta Starts Friday

October 8th, 2008

Many of you have already been granted access to the upcoming Resistance 2 beta; you either pre-ordered the game at GameStop and received your key code that way, or you registered at the official site for beta testing. However, we’re still not exactly sure when the the action will begin.

Initially, we had heard Sony prepared to begin testing on October 6, but that day has come and gone, so we’re still in a waiting pattern. Thankfully, that beta may only be a few days off: firstly, we’ve received several inside tidbits of information that points towards a Friday, October 10 launch. We won’t reveal the sources for that, but let’s just say they’re at least semi-reliable. Secondly, an administrator over at the Resistance 2 forum posted the following message in reply to all the rumors zipping around the Internet:

“Over the last few days, I’ve seen several threads that *think* they know the start of the public beta. Well, they are wrong.

We haven’t announced any firm dates for the beta yet. But trust me, it’s close (like, real close). Please be patient and just ignore the threads falsely reporting the start date. As soon as we can tell you, we will–promise!”

Well, this Friday would certainly qualify as “real close,” so here’s hoping our information is correct. We’ve been waiting patiently to get our hands on one of the most anticipated games of the year, and indeed, one of the most anticipated next-gen titles to date. Resistance 2 is scheduled to release on November 4, and it’s guaranteed to be an absolutely gigantic holiday game; the PS3 should get yet another awesome exclusive for 2008!
